Rossendale took the early lead with a try from Adam Howard, the result of a forceful driving maul, Lewis Allen’s conversion affording a 7-0 lead.
With the Rossendale pack getting the better of the exchanges a pick up from the back of a scrum by Matt Lamprey opened the way for the supporting Leyton Taylor to career in for a second, Allen again on hand with the extras to close the half with Rossendale 14-0 ahead.
A penalty from Allen opened the second half but with the home side reduced to fourteen due to Howard receiving a red card for a second yellow, Wirral got Tommy Akehurst over for a try.
Rossendale replied with a try from Anthony Bingham after strong forward pressure and swift hands across the line had created the opportunity for the winger.
Allen added the conversion but Wirral hit back with a try from Jacob Mitchell converted by Dan Harvey before in a final flourish another pick up at the back of a five metre scrum by Lamprey to set up a driving maul got Nick Fontaine over for the bonus score.
After the final whistle head coach Byron McGuigan commented “I’m very happy with the performance, the weather conditions didn’t make it easy but the forwards did a fantastic job in the scrums and went to work really well inside the opposition 22m. While Wirral were more interested in scrapping we managed to stay focused and got the bonus point win. Stand out performers were Adam Howard and Leyton Taylor in the forwards."
"AJ Potgeier and Lewis Allen controlled the game well,” he added
Looking forward to this coming Saturday he continued, “We have an exciting week leading up toward Sandbach , few areas we can tidy up and really put ourselves in best position to compete against a well drilled side away from home. Sandbach is a quality outfit and very well drilled. We have to be at our very best to get a result.
I’m really proud of this team , it’s early days in this competition but we are in the right area of the table and that’s a credit to their commitment to training , application and attitude on match days. The next three weeks are very big for our season, three finals really . The boys will be geared up ready to take the challenge on.”
